Wagering requirements explained with UK examples in pounds
A wagering requirement is the amount you have to bet to be able to withdraw a bonus or what a bonus has won. As of the 19th of January 2026, in the UK, this can be no more than 10 times the bonus. This guide will look at wagering requirements in terms of pounds.

What wagering requirements are
A casino gives you bonus money or spins and before you can withdraw them you have to fulfil a wagering requirement.

A wagering requirement is written as a multiple, for example 10x. The multiple indicates how many times you have to bet the bonus to fulfil the requirement. 10x a £20 bonus means you have to place £200 worth of bets. Any bets placed, win or lose, count towards fulfilling the requirement.
When the total is reached, the bonus and anything it won become cash you can withdraw. Until then, they sit in a bonus balance with rules attached: a limit on each bet, games that do not count, and a time limit.
Each time you bet with the bonus you are not necessarily losing it, you could be up a good amount, but over time the casino’s edge eats into it so a bonus with a high multiple is a poor one.
- Wagering requirement
- The total amount you need to bet to withdraw a bonus. Also known as a rollover or playthrough.
- Multiple
- The number before the x, for example in 10x. In the UK this cannot be greater than 10.
- Base
- What the multiple is applied to: the bonus, the bonus and the deposit, or spin winnings.
- Game weighting
- The share of each bet that counts. Slots usually 100%, roulette often 10% or less.
- Max bet
- The largest single bet allowed while you are wagering. Often £5, sometimes less.
- Expiry
- How long you have to finish. 7 days is common; some spins last 24 hours.
Wagering requirements in the UK since 19 January 2026
The Gambling Commission capped wagering at 10x for every bonus offered to players in Great Britain.

any wagering requirements attached to incentives (such as bonuses) must not exceed 10 times the incentive amount
Apply wagering requirements to incentives, which require customers to play through bonus funds, over a maximum of 10 times.
From the current evidence, we do not think it is necessary to review rules on weightings attached to wagering requirements at this time
Before the cap, 35x and 40x were normal, and some casinos asked for 50x or more. The Commission's own example was a £10 bonus at 50x, which meant £500 of play. Under the new rule the same bonus can ask for £100 at most.
The same change banned welcome offers that mix products, such as a sports bet that unlocks casino spins. If a UK page still shows 35x, it is out of date or not for UK players.
Bets needed on a £20 bonus, slots at 100%
- 50x, before the cap£1,000
- 35x, before the cap£700
- 10x, the UK limit now£200
- 1x£20
- No wagering£0
What a wagering requirement counts on: the base
The multiple is half the sentence. The other half says what it multiplies.

| The terms say | On a £20 deposit with a £20 bonus | Bets needed |
|---|---|---|
| 10x the bonus | 10 × £20 | £200 |
| 10x the deposit and bonus | 10 × £40 | £400 |
| 1x the spin winnings (say £6) | 1 × £6 | £6 |
| Play your deposit once | 1 × £20 | £20 |
| No wagering | Nothing | £0 |
All of these are legal in the UK. The deposit-plus-bonus base is the one to watch: Grosvenor's UK terms set "Total wagering amount = £600 (£20 + £40 x10)" on a £40 bonus. That is 15 times the bonus while staying within the 10x rule.
Our deposit and bonus wagering guide goes through the different wordings. The wagering calculator can do any of them.
How game weighting changes wagering requirements
Weighting refers to how much of the total bet a casino will consider towards the turnover requirement.

Bets needed to clear a £20 bonus at 10x, by game
- Slots, 100%£200
- Roulette, 10%£2,000
- Live casino, 5%£4,000
- Baccarat, 0%never clears
Each casino sets its own weights, and Casumo counts slots 100%, roulette and blackjack 10%, live casino 5% and baccarat 0%, and slots with an RTP of 96.8% or more only 30%. BetMGM counts live and table games 0% towards its qualifying stake.
This is why a 10x bonus can be good for a slots player but not for a live player. More in our game weighting guide.

Rules that apply while you meet a wagering requirement
Break one of these, and the casino can take the bonus and its winnings.

- Max bet
Like a cap on each bet, such as a €5 bet limit at Casumo, or a £5 bet limit on Betway's £50 bonus, see the max bet rule.
- Expiry
Unfinished wagering requirements will expire. At Casumo this is 7 days, see casino bonus expiry.
- Excluded games
Some games do not count at all, or are banned, see excluded games.
- Low-risk bets
Covering red and black, or similar near-certain bets, is listed as abuse in many terms.
- Withdrawing early
In most cases, cancelling the bonus by withdrawing your money will result in losing the bonus and any winnings, though your deposit will be kept. See withdrawing with an active bonus.
Wagering requirements and your own deposit
UK rules protect the money you paid in, even while a bonus is running.
Following the CMA's undertakings and the Gambling Commission's fair terms guidance, some operators show your deposit, bonus and winnings separately. You are also allowed to withdraw your deposit at any time. Wagering rules must not apply to your deposit.
What you can lose is the bonus. If you withdraw before the wagering is done, most casinos cancel the bonus and anything it won. BetMGM's terms say the opposite for its spins: you can withdraw your own money and keep them.
- Real money balance
- Deposits and winnings are withdrawable at any time.
- Bonus balance
- Bonus money and winnings are locked until the wagering requirement is fulfilled.
- Which is used first
- It varies. Some casinos take bets from your real money first; Casumo splits each bet in proportion. See bonus money vs real money.
Offers with low or no wagering requirements
Most of the new UK welcome offers require less than 10x.

After the wagering cap was put in place, many casinos removed the wagering requirement from the welcome spins. Now at many casinos, you simply have to deposit and stake £10 or £20 once to receive your welcome spins, with the winnings paid in cash. MrQ takes no wagering on any of its offers.
